ADMIRING BILL CUNNINGHAM
Honest Fashion
You probably all have heard of the famous Bill Cunningham (if you haven’t, shame on you and search the internet!). I admire his work for quite a while now. I remember when I saw an article of him for the New York Times for the first time. It was about the Margiela duvet coat. I knew absolutly nothing about fashion at that time and so I didn’t realise who photographed it or who the designer was, the only remarkable thing was that I couldn’t get it out of my head.
Last month I went to a bookstore and saw a book of Maison Martin Margiela, mesmerized by it I read it (quickly) from cover to cover IN the bookstore. When I saw the article again I rememberd first seeing it and it all came together: my favorite designer shot by my favorite photographer. From then on I started to follow Bill Cunningham more closely and when I went to Paris I hoped I would see him at fashion week, and I did.
In the Tuileries after the Viktor & Rolf show I was running around like a crazy person to get some shots from ‘the rich and famous’ when I saw him standing on his own doing his thing. Although I expected I would be mostly impressed by seeing for example Miroslava, Chiari or Iggy, I wasn’t. But the moment I saw Bill smiling behing his camera my heart melted a bit. I still regret not going up to him and saying hi, maybe next year!
P.S.: You really have to watch the documentary Bill Cunningham New York, a real inspiration.
