CREATIVE FRIENDS: SOPHIE FROM STERNUM
Honest Fashion
Sophie and I have been friends for a while now. She was probably the one who stimulated me to discover the world of vintage and owns the most amazing pieces. Her style is not definable with one word but it’s definitely edgy, original with attention for detail.
Down below you can read the questions I asked her about her label Sternum, a jewellery label existing out a serie of necklaces.
When did you start your label and why?
1,5 year ago I started experimenting with different materials to make DIY necklaces for myself since I’m not that easy when it comes to buying jewellery. I wanted to make clean designs that stand out in their simplicity. Necklaces you can wear on almost any occasion and match almost every outfit.
What’s the meaning of the name ‘Sternum’?
Because the focus of the brand will be necklaces, I picked the name ‘Sternum’ since it’s the medical name of breastbone and therefore leads indirectly to the focus of it. The names of the designs are all chosen by instant associations popping up in my mind while making them. (I also try to match the necklace’s names to each other somehow. Same letters coming back etc, it has to form a unity/ one whole)
What would you like to achieve?
I would like to maintain this ‘job’ next to my future job (god knows what that will be). But when I dream bigger, I want to create my jewellery as a fulltime job. Also it would be very cool the expand the current collection from non precious materials with necklaces made out of precious materials as well.
Does architecture have an influence on your work?
I think it does have an influence when it comes to the forms and lines. It is not something I like to think about too much though, the proportions just have to feel right.
What’s your personal favourite from your collection(s)?
That would be the first one I made, which is Tetris. And Matrix, because it seriously matches every outfit.
