Real or fake.
Honest Fashion
Real or fake, that’s the question. What’s the importance of having the real thing or the ‘fake’? Vetements spiked this discussion and made the whole world run for a new (and improved?) version of the real thing. When DHL shirts hit the fashion scene the whole world was perplexed. 250 euro for a shirt that you can find straight at the source for 10 euros, why would you even?!
But head of design of Vetements, Demna Gvasalia, smartly hacked the whole fashion world. Some people would call it a scam and others find it genius. I’m still in between opinions and very confused. If such an easy thing can make the whole fashion world go crazy, what’s there to come. What’s will the future of fashion bring? Or will it not be more than a mere diversion between people with money and the ones without (real versus fake). But in this case, what’s the real deal? The guy of the tourist shop in Antwerp who started making t-shirts for the sole purpose of pleasing tourists or Demna, who made it into a fashion statement?
Although this shirt has more meaning for me than being a fashion statement and most people don’t even get the ambiguity, it also puts me in the fashion victim corner. But even I can not suppress the grin on my face when I see people’s wondering faces. Still there’s that question what is real and what is fake?
